Rooms are what you would expect in a hostel.
But the location is just amazing. We checked in at night and to get there, we had to go through the church and it gave jitters, but it was worth it. It has a great view from the rooms and cafe. And the service of helpers is amazing. They were really helpful. Would love to come back here.
The cafe here is amazing. Very spacious. Lovely cake and nice latte, tea and hot chocolate. Great views out the windows too... 2 nice kind young lads working in there, the place was nice and clean and warm. The furniture is good too and with some quirky made stools. The YHA gardens are also very nice to walk round.
We had a great stay. Reception staff on arrival were a little glum and distant.
Beautifully clean lovely view, well equipped. Obviously due to location you have to be physically fit. Really enjoyed it
This was bloody brilliant. We had a massive room, to ourselves, looking over the Abbey. Just perfect. Car park for visitors only system where you give them your reg at the reception, 24hour ability to go to the vending machines for drinks and snacks. The room was warm, minimally decorated, however the building is steeped in history, and for 20 quid each a night it was absolutely spot on for few nights on the coast.
It is absolutely perfect if you're just looking for the basics when it comes to accommodation. Very affordable (£30 per night). The biggest advantage of staying here is that it gives you free entry into the Abbey grounds. All-you-can-eat breakfast for £9.95 from the café. I probably wouldn't recommend it if you're someone who likes their privacy.
The best possible place to stay if you are a fan of the Abbey and amazing views of Whitby. Not the best place to stay if you need an accessible route to town. It's right at the top of the 199 steps, so gives a wonderful view over the town, but means that you either need to walk down the steps or am incredibly steep cobbled slope.
Went with my 5 friends. Got a room that slept 5 with a bathroom. Very clean. Amasing kitchen to prepare your own food. Lounge and conservatory. Parking space available. Cafe is really nice and not expensive. Wonderful experience will be going again.
I had an absolutely outstanding week here with Winston, my service dog.
I was welcomed initially by Sue, the manager who helped me to my room. Unfortunately, it wasn't the Disabled room I'd booked.
I must point out that this was not the hostels fault.
However, head offices.
After a couple of days, I was moved with no fuss but much appreciated help into the Disabled room conveniently next to the lift.
Nothing was too much trouble for the amazing team of staff that interacted and worked extremely well together.
I highly recommend the delicious all you can eat breakfast as well as all the other items on the menu.
The burgers are extremely good, as is the chicken pie with mash, veg, and gravy, which are all very reasonably priced.
On several occasions, I engaged with the staff for a general chat.
Chris is a really nice & informative chap as is Tom, who I mainly chatted to during my stay.
Gabby was a big hit with Winston, as was Sue, Chris, Tom gosh almost everyone.
The only upsetting incident that occurred was when i entered the t.v lounge with Winston, where a guest was watching the news.
He immediately ripped into me, saying that the dog should not be there, I pointed out that Winston is a service dog (Winston's uniform was on stating this) to which he replied in a nefarious way "I dont give a F#*#".
I told him that under the 2010 Disabled Enablement Act, Winston had every right to be there.
I offered to show him the legislation that he wasn't interested in seeing threatening to smash my face in !
He then stormed out of the room, stating he was going to reception to report me.
I mentioned this to a member of staff who spoke to the person immediately resolving the issue.
What was said I have no idea.
However, since then, this man just kept out of my way, thankfully.
Apart from this small incident, I had an outstanding stay as mentioned.
The hostel is 4* for me. It should be 5*
All the staff are 5*+ without a doubt.
I have stayed at many hostels. However, for me, Y.H.A Whitby sets the standard leading by example.
Thank you all for such an amazing time as well as for all the help afforded to myself
